Ben Marshall
Quote of the Day

Ben has spent a decade helping organizations turn strategy into action across higher education, healthcare and life sciences, government, and social impact, supporting leaders as an advisor and operator. He began his career at Concentra Analytics (now Orgvue), where he helped build one of the UK's fastest-growing data and analytics firms, before moving into the public sector to lead the launch of the NHS Export Collaborative — a government-backed initiative to bring British healthcare expertise to international markets. Along the way he has also worked as a strategy consultant for public and nonprofit organizations, taught leadership at Harvard, and served as a nonexec and advisor for several social enterprises.

Across all of it, he has worked in close, trusted relationships with the principals he serves, translating their vision across the organization and helping make them as effective as they can be: from strategic planning and special project delivery to governance and staff development. He also writes on social impact, most recently for the Stanford Social Innovation Review.

Now finishing a social impact fellowship at Dartmouth, Ben is looking for chief of staff and strategic initiatives roles, helping Boston-based leaders serve their stakeholders more effectively and efficiently. Boston's anchor institutions are being asked to do more with less: federal research and health funding is shrinking, endowment taxes are rising, and public trust is harder to win. Their leaders are making hard decisions quickly, and need people who can connect those decisions to what actually happens on the ground. That is where Ben is looking to help.

Examples of special projects

  • Joined a boutique consulting firm as its first tech-enabled advisory hire, then helped open its US office and served on the deal team for a £41M (~$56M) private equity raise.
  • Developed new commercial governance processes for the UK Department for International Trade as it built its first Government-to-Government trade vehicle, subsequently used to win multimillion-dollar international contracts.
  • Secured a $140K/year increase in government funding and a three-year lease on a new teaching site for a hospital school.
  • Redesigned the global management information function of a SaaS startup, cutting board reporting time by 85% and saving $100K a year.
  • Redesigned the annual strategic and financial planning process for a public sector consultancy subsequently named one of the UK's leading management firms by the Financial Times.
  • Conceptualized and built an MBA Planner tool that helps students align their courses with their goals; Tuck subsequently launched it school-wide, crediting his "trailblazing" work.

Ben received his BA in biology from the University of Oxford, his MPA from Harvard Kennedy School, where he was a John F. Kennedy Fellow, and his MBA with Distinction from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, where he was the McGowan Fellow and an Edward Tuck Scholar (top 5% of the class).

Outside of work, you'll find Ben walking near fresh water, watching something that isn't horror at the movies, writing bad poetry, trying to become a better boulderer, skier, and squash and pickleball player, or catching up on last weekend's Formula 1, where he's been cheering on the underdogs since he was 14.

If you lead an organization in Boston and are thinking about a chief of staff, have a project that doesn't fit neatly anywhere else, or know someone who does, get in touch.
